Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika whose grandson, Tamburai is studying in Taiwan on scholarship will have to trek to Beijing to continue with studies following assurance by China today.
China's assistant foreign affairs minister, Zhai Juh made the assurance Thursday after meeting Malawi's foreign affairs minister, Joyce Banda in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Banda was not readily available for comment but ministry officials confirmed the meeting.
Juh also confirmed meeting Banda and making the assurance.
"Students will not regret in China," Juh said asking Malawians high ranking officials not to panic over their sibling’s studies.
Other students relocating to Beijing are sons of Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Bright Msaka’s and Malawi’s Ambassador to Mozambique Martin Kansichi.
The daughter of Thengo Maloya who was Malawi’s Ambassador to Taiwan will also be among about 26 Malawians studying in Taiwan who will move to China.
About 13 students were studying undergraduate courses for five years while eight others were on Masters programmes.
The Malawi foreign minister also met Iran government officials amidst reports that the country will soon establish formal ties with Iran and that President Mutharika will pay a state visit to Tehran.
