Malawi has finally cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan and switched to Mainland China putting to rest speculation that the Chinese were courting the impoverished southern African country and luring them with US$6 billion in aid.

Foreign Affairs Minister Joyce Banda confirmed the switch at a news conference in the capital, Lilongwe.

"The Government of the Republic of Malawi recognizes that there is but one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan in an inalienable part of China's territory," said Banda.

“The Government of the Republic of Malawi and the Government of the People's Republic of China , in conformity with the interests and desire of the two peoples, have decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations between the two countries at ambassadorial level as from December 28, 2007,” said a joint communiqué by the two countries released by Malawi governmen which Banda quoted.

”The Government of the Republic of Malawi and the Government of the People's Republic of China agree to develop friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries under the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence,” reads the communiqué.

China said in the statement that it supports Malawi in its efforts to safeguard its state sovereignty and develop its economy.

Meanwhile, Taiwan has regretted the severance of 41 years relations with Malawi.

"We deeply regret that Malawi has decided to establish ties with China under Chinese threats and seduction," Taiwanese Deputy Foreign Minister Yang Tzu-pao moaned.

"This is a great humiliation to our government and the Taiwanese people," Yang said. "This is not something a self-proclaimed democratic country with 42-year-long relations with Taiwan should do."

Nyasa Times first revealed that two senior Malawian cabinet ministers visited Beijing last month to cultivate formal relations.

Long at last the President has listened. This is one major step forward towards development of the nation. W e are leaving in a competetive world and technological culture where one cannot deny the fact that the "untouched shall be touched, the unseen shall be seen, unrealised shall be realised and the undone shall be done. I have to congratulate the President (Dr Bingu Wa Mutharika) and His Cabinet Ministers for their Great Awakening. Keep it up. We shall meet in Beijing. Nkhani yosangalatsa kwambiri kwa ife a Malawi.

Congrats Bingu! But leadership means planning for the future. Foreign Policy of a country is always a major preoccupation of visionary leadership. My worry is, Malawi leadership went to UN and made strong statements on Taiwan. The tapes are fresh and other countries will reflect back on what we said. Kodi, this $6 billion includes the Karonga/Chitipa road, Parliament building and all the rice schemes that were directly benefitting the ordinary people. This issue should have been discussed in Parliament. I still remain Thomas Didimu. Rgds Jon

Conglaturations Malawi and president Bingu Wamtharika!!! This was and is a well calculated move. Actually we have heard and seen how Che Biani (sp) the former president how he has lost the recent elections and has since resigned from party the party leadership of DPP.Opposition leader who has swept the elections favours Taiwan being part of main land China. So we could be having one China with this new development!!! Vyaya.
