Where there is smoke, some fire must be present. What is happening vindicates this simple but important saying. When the media exposed this story, officials kept on playing it down, till it could be concealed no more. I am in fact very concerned with the relationship the government has with the media. The government keeps on withholding very important information which is very vital for the people. How can the whole minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs Joyce Banda, say that she knew nothing and that all was just speculation?

One thing that I have observed with countries that are getting help from china is that on all the projects that are funded by China, all the labour comes from china. In Angola all contruction labourers (I mean opelekera matope, not engineers) are Chinese. In St Vincent and the Grenadines all the labourers working on a stadium funded by the Chinese were from China. In addition, lots of Chinese have flocked to the island setting up groceries selling sub-standard shoes and garments from China thereby kicking out the locals out of business. We should tread very carefully, cos we will end up with the Chinese labourers working on our Parliament Building and the KA-CP Road. In addition these Chinese have impregnated local girls at alarming scales leaving behind offspring with strabge-looking eyes. I hope, as the Chair of the relevant Parliamentary Committe has said, Govt has assessed the pros and cons and studied what has happened in countries like Zambia, Angola, Sudan where China has a presence.

I wouldn't want to go into details as to why Malawi has switched to Mainland China. But I do hope that they have seriously looked into the pros and cons (in the short term as well as in the long term) of the whole deal rather than just getting excited with the promise from the Mainland. I have discussed this at length with colleagues from countries that have diplomatic relation with Mainland. Despite the disappointing projections of what Malawi would become due to her choice, I still do hope that the Malawi Government has seriously considered the implications involved, and hence the mitigative measures.
